5 Simple Steps to Spring-Cleaning Your Closet

Spring cleaning is upon us, and professional designers with Closets by Design are busy helping homeowners across the country get organized. While Closets by Design provides custom closet systems to fit any consumer’s storage needs, they also offer expert advice to help you cut through the clutter:

  1. Stop storing your seasonal clothes and get a Closet Organizer - It’s amazing how much more can fit into a closet that has an organizer system installed. Clothes, shoes and accessories for all seasons can fit neatly into one closet. No more searching through boxes under your bed or in the garage for something you “put away for summer” when everything can be at your fingertips.
  2. Give your closet a fresh start – Once a year you should give your closet a complete cleaning; wash or vacuum the floor, dust the shelving and walls of your closet so your space is clean and fresh smelling. By committing to an annual cleaning, you are also committing to going through your belongings to decide what you really want to keep and what is ready to be discarded.
  3. Sell, trade, or donate – Many people have tightened their budgets and people are finding new ways to make their money stretch farther. Sell clothes through on-line auction sites or a garage sale. Hold a Trading Party with girlfriends to acquire a “new” wardrobe without spending any money. Donate the remaining items to a tax-deductible charity.
  4. Create an organizational system – Hang like-types of clothing together (i.e. shirts, pants, skirts, etc.) and make sure all articles are facing the same direction. Group them by color and from dark to light.
  5. Avoid wire hangers – Use sturdy plastic hangers or wood hangers with clips for all items. Wire hangers tend to misshape clothes, and because most do not have groves to keep clothing from slipping off, you’ll spend extra time sorting and re-hanging items you find on the floor.
