It’s always special when family and friends who live in other parts of the country come for a visit. And, if you can put them up in your home, you can make the most of your time together. If you don’t have a guest room, someone may wind up sleeping on the couch. However, you don’t need an extra room to have an extra bed. All you need is space for a Wall Bed.

What’s a Wall Bed?

A Wall Bed, sometimes called a pull-down or fold-down bed, is a bed that’s hinged at one end to store vertically against the wall or inside a closet or cabinet. The earliest folding bed was patented in 1899 by Leonard C. Bailey, an African-American inventor and entrepreneur. This metal bed frame and mattress that folded in the middle was widely used by the U.S. Army. Today, it’s thought of as the precursor to the sleeper sofa. In 1912, a patent was granted to another inventor for what he called a “disappearing bed.” It was a full-size mattress on a metal frame that attached to the wall and folded up against it using a pivot and counterbalanced design. You’ve probably seen this type of bed in old movies and television shows. In them, characters lived in a tiny studio apartment where a traditional bed would have taken up the entire room. Immensely popular for a while, wall beds fell out of fashion in the 1930s and didn’t start making a comeback until the difficult economic times of the 1970s when people began moving into smaller apartments or in with relatives. Today, they’re seen as a great option anywhere extra sleeping accommodations are needed, or when floor space is limited, such as tiny houses, apartments, hotels, and mobile homes.

The Perfect Solution for House Guests

If your home doesn’t have a spare bedroom, a wall bed is the perfect solution for overnight house guests. Wall beds can be built in the living room, an office, a bonus room or a loft. . Today’s designs have come a long way from a simple closet that holds the bed. Today, many wall beds have cabinets built on either side. When they are folded up, no one can tell there is a bed in there.Closets by Design offers wall beds in single, double, and queen sizes. They are custom-designed to fit both the available space and the style of your home. Our representatives will suggest the best location to install the bed and will talk to you about what you want the space to look like when the bed is folded.
